The GPS can attach to your bird via a tail mount or leg mount. The tail mount is permanent and will stay attached to the tail of your bird until the feather molts out naturally. Some birds are capable of removing this mount but if they leave it alone, it is permanent on the feather. The GPS unit is then attached to this mount before your bird takes flight.
The tail mount is attached with tools provided in your GPS kit. It gets clamped onto the tail feather and is made of metal. Typically flyers also use a drop of super glue to ensure it's on securely. The thicker the shaft of the feather used, the easier it is to ensure it clamps on successfully.
The GPS unit is then simply slid into place within the mount. It is very easy to take on and off. Simply squeeze the two prongs together, slide into the mount, let go so the prongs extend and slide back down.
Depending on your bird and your own preference, some flyers put these mounts high up and others put them lower, some put them center and others put them off to the side. The smaller the bird, the more likely you will want it centered and higher.
Your GPS kit comes with a Pocket Link, which connects to any apple or android device through the app. Make sure everything is charged, connected and ready to go before ever putting it onto your bird.
Telemetry is more lightweight than the GPS and is ideal for birds who can't handle the weight of the GPS.
Just like the GPS unit, the Telemetry unit also utilizes a permanent mount that attached to a single tail feather. This mount is permanently attached and will stay on for the life of the feather.
The Telemetry looks different than the GPS because it's a circular device that's silver in color with a long, thin antenna. It attaches into the mount the same way as the GPS with the prongs.
The big difference is your Telemetry gun that will tell you very specifically which direction and distance your bird is in. The beeping method, once mastered, can be very precise.
The little colored things are tail mounts. They attach permanently to the feather until it naturally molts out. The clamps are used to clamp the mount tightly around the shaft of the feather. Typically a dot of super glue is also used to ensure it stays on since it holds your Telemetry or GPS transmitting device.
This is the device that is put into the tail mount that actually transmits the information of where your bird is. It is only put into the mount when your bird is going to be flying, otherwise it is taken on and off by you so you can charge it and make sure it's in working condition.
This is the device that is put into the tail mount if you decide to go with the Telemetry unit instead, as you can see it's much smaller and lighter. It is only put on your bird's tail mount when you are going to fly as well.
The antennas are replaceable should they get damaged. They are also available in different thicknesses to protect the antenna from damage (cough macaws cough) so you don't have to worry if one gets kinked in the field, you can easily replace it.
Your pocket link receives all the data from the transmitter, so you will want to be able to keep it on you when flying your bird.
The Telemetry gun works on both Telemetry and GPS units and helps determine the exact position of your transmitter.
The part of the GPS that is removable (besides the antenna) is the battery which looks like this. You will want to ensure to always charge these batteries when not in use.
The Telemetry battery is this small silver circle that fits into the Telemetry transmitter unit.
This video is a how-to tutorial on how to make a custom tail mount for birds with smaller tail feathers than would fit the traditional mounts.
Example species ideal for this would be Eclectus parrots, African grey parrots and conures.
